Backlinks are incoming links from a website which lead to your site. That means if site A somewhere on the content includes a full www to your site its counted as a backlink.
Backlinks or Link building is very important for your site. Especially a new website needs lot of backlinks. They help your site a lot in bringing traffic but also through backlinks you get better Page Rank. There are many ways to check how many backlinks your site has. Lot of Webmaster Tools and Webmaster sites provide this feature which are called “Backlink Checker”. New sites need backlinks but its also a never ending job what means even if you have older site you should still continue to get more and more backlinks.
How to get Backlinks?
Generally you get backlinks posting on different Blogs (if you comment a thread you can leave your www in the thread or when entering your Data on a Blog), posting on other sites, leaving a signature on a forum where you are active, submiting your site to webdirectories etc. More explanation is following.
Very popular way to get Backlinks are webdirectories. Webdirectories are sites which have organized categories and niches (e.g. Computer, Blog, Travel categories etc…) and also subcategories to those sites. You can find lot of webdirectories on the web, some offer free and some other paid submission. Once you submit your site and it gets approved by directory your site will be listed under approperiate subcategory. After a while and google index that directory again (can tak a few days or a week) you will get a backlink from that site. Some popular webdirectories are avivadirectory & alivedirectory which offer only paid submissions. But iam sure you will find more directories which give links for free.
Posting on Blogs is also very popular and you will see when visiting some Blogs there will be pretty much comments. If you check the name of the person who added a comment you will discover the link to his site. Feel free also to add your comment which should be topic related and not spam. If you spam a topic the admin will probably delete your comment and you wont get your post approved which means no backlink.
If you are already active on forums, dont forget to add your signature in your profile. When adding make sure you enter the whole http://www so it will also bring you some backlinks when indexed by google or other SE like yahoo etc…
After a while and maybe 500 posts you will get 500 backlinks and so you increase your backlinks.
